Descendents of Daniel Kahill and Rachel Miller:

    I. Daniel Kahill

Daniel Kahill: "An honest man is the noblest work of God. There are many of them. They are not all high in life, or filling paying and honorable positions, either. Generally, honest men are found among "the common people", so called. However, there are exceptions to the rule, but the exceptions only prove the rule. Daniel Kahill is one who is known as an honest man. He is about 84 years old. He was born in and raised in Ireland. He came to America 61 years ago. He landed in New York, and from there he came to Eastern North Carolina. Finally he came to Hickory, North Carolina. When he came here, the Old Hickory Tavern was the only building standing. He was a rock mason by trade. He built the railroad culvert near the mineral spring, and also the one opposite of the Piedmont wagon shops. He married here, and went to farming as a tenant. By industry, be bought a farm of his own and has always made planty and some to spare. Mr. Kahill has never been a witness in court. He rejoices in the fact that he has never had to testify against any man. As for the truth, his word is his oath and bond. He is honest to a cent. His neighbors have absolute confidence in his integrity. In his life. he has done more than farm well and build structures out of stone, he has built for himself a character for truth and honesty- a structure more valuable than gold and more lasting than time itself.
